The d’Oar Handle
A short 3 steps to a new extension didn’t warrant a whole stair rail. In just 12 inches of wall space a diagonal handle would be odd and matching the chunky timber staircase would be awkward in such a small space.
While knocking about the idea, I was inspired by the clients nautical background and suggested an upright grab handle, either a mast or an oar that could be mounted vertically and grabbed from the top or bottom step.
Heavy duty curtain centre loops perfectly fitted the oars diameter, and I machined grub screw holes to grip the pole tightly.
The oar was sanded back as it was more shabby than chic, the final finish was perfect. A simple light blue band under the varnished finish tied in nicely with the existing decor.
A one off from our design studio : the ‘d’Oar Handle’
Shaker style cupboard
Another quick win, a little extra storage space right where its needed. This corner was an awkward space with an unfinished stair end which was ready for toes to be stubbed. Fitting a simple made to measure 3 shelf unit into the gap was the perfect solution
Dave’s Cool Wall
My recent project integrates stylish bedroom cabinets with bespoke pull out desk and wall storage, to create a grown up bedroom media unit. Accessibility was a key feature from the start, enabling the control of radiator thermostat and lighting from a specialised 'Eyegaze' iPad, allowing eye control of all features within a single SmartHome App. Wireless remote controllers support app control as well as RF remote so that his team of support staff can easily find the main controls without the need for an app, while Dave has full control, giving him a little extra autonomy.
The concept came together quickly from early discussions and the design was fleshed out initially using 3D modeling to give a render to make visualisation of the final design a reality. Howdens provided the base units and were helpful in providing design enhancements and validating what could be provided off the shelf. thank you Rachel.
Most of the build was completed off site to minimise any disruption, with built units delivered and integrated quickly. The shelves, desk unit and base units were assembled already with as much of the wiring preassembled or fitted. Massive shout out to LEDSpace who were extremely helpful with providing all the LED controllers, power supply and LED Strips.
End panels, bridge section and profiling work was completed to finish the unit on site followed by app integration and handover.
The clients were extremelely happy with the transformation from a mix of old pine units to a stylish, modern, integrated unit with bespoke lighting.
This project was a real eye opener for me, helping me to see beyond the wheelchair and get a snapshot of living with a physical disability. Dave really is a true inspiration, and a very funny guy.

Loftier Relations
Jana’s relationship with her loft space was totally transformed with the addition of this sleek and simple ladder. No longer were the far reaches of her attic inaccessible and harbouring stuff she no longer needed but couldnt easily reach. She and her family now have a well behaved and perfectly pull down-able ladder to gain access to the loftier reaches of her house.
